About 궁합 Gunghap

Preserving Korean cultural traditions in the digital age

📖Our Story

Gunghap.app was created to preserve and share the fascinating tradition of 궁합 (gunghap) with people around the world. Growing up in Korean culture, I experienced firsthand how friends and family would playfully calculate name compatibility using Hangul stroke counts—a practice passed down through generations.

What started as a fun childhood game carries deep cultural significance. Korean culture has long valued harmony and balance in relationships, whether romantic, friendship, or family bonds. While modern Koreans understand that 궁합 is for entertainment, it remains a cherished cultural touchpoint that connects younger generations to their heritage.

This platform digitizes that traditional practice, making it accessible to anyone curious about Korean culture. We've expanded beyond just name compatibility to include other forms of 궁합—from zodiac signs and blood types to MBTI personalities and saju (four pillars of destiny)—reflecting the various ways Koreans explore interpersonal chemistry.

🔮What is 궁합?

궁합 (pronounced "goong-hap") literally translates to "palace harmony" or "compatibility" in Korean. The concept originates from traditional Korean beliefs about cosmic harmony and balance, influenced by Chinese philosophical systems including:

  • Yin and Yang (음양/陰陽) - The balance of opposing forces
  • Five Elements (오행/五行) - Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water
  • Chinese Zodiac (띠) - 12 animal signs based on birth year
  • Saju (사주/四柱) - Four Pillars of Destiny based on birth date and time

Historically, 궁합 was taken seriously when arranging marriages. Families would consult fortune tellers to analyze the prospective couple's birth information and determine if they would have a harmonious union. Today, it's primarily enjoyed as entertainment, though some people still consider it when making important relationship decisions.

💡Why We Built This

Cultural Preservation: As Korean culture gains global popularity through K-pop, K-dramas, and Korean cuisine, we want to share the deeper cultural practices that shape Korean society. 궁합 is a window into Korean values around relationships and harmony.

Educational Purpose: This tool helps people understand how Hangul (the Korean alphabet) works through its stroke-counting system. Each Korean character is composed of specific strokes, and learning to count them provides insight into the scientific and artistic design of the Korean writing system, created by King Sejong the Great in 1443.

Entertainment with Context: While 궁합 is fun, we emphasize it's not scientific or predictive. Real relationships are built on communication, respect, shared values, and love—not numerology. We provide historical and cultural context to help users appreciate the tradition without taking results too seriously.

Accessibility: Traditional 궁합 required knowledge of Hangul stroke counts and manual calculation. Our tool automates this, making it accessible to non-Korean speakers and younger generations who may not have learned the traditional method.
