How 궁합 Works

Understanding the mechanics and meaning behind Korean compatibility calculations

1

Convert Names to Hangul

The first step is converting each name to Korean Hangul characters. For Korean names, this is straightforward. For non-Korean names, we use phonetic approximation to find the closest Hangul representation.

Example:

English: "Samuel"새뮤얼
English: "Kate"케이트

About Hangul: Korean Hangul is a featural alphabet created in 1443 by King Sejong the Great. Each character represents a syllable block composed of consonants and vowels, making it one of the most scientific writing systems in the world.

2

Count Hangul Strokes

Each Hangul character is broken down into individual letters (consonants and vowels), and we count the traditional calligraphic strokes required to write each letter. This system is well-established in Korean culture and used in various traditional practices.

Stroke Count Examples:

Consonants:

ㄱ (g/k)2 strokes
ㄴ (n)2 strokes
ㅁ (m)4 strokes
ㅅ (s)2 strokes

Vowels:

ㅏ (a)2 strokes
ㅓ (eo)2 strokes
ㅗ (o)2 strokes
ㅣ (i)1 stroke

Full Example:

= ㅅ(2) + ㅐ(3) = 5 strokes
= ㅁ(4) + ㅠ(3) = 7 strokes
= ㅇ(1) + ㅓ(2) + ㄹ(5) = 8 strokes
3

Interleave the Numbers

Take the stroke counts from both names and interleave them—alternating between person 1 and person 2. This represents the two people coming together and intertwining their energies.

Visual Example:

Person 1: 새뮤얼
Strokes: [5, 7, 8]
Person 2: 케이트
Strokes: [4, 3, 6]
Interleaved:
5 4 7 3 8 6
4

Build the Pyramid

Starting with the interleaved numbers, add adjacent pairs and keep only the last digit (ones place). Each row becomes one number shorter, creating a pyramid shape. Continue until only 2 digits remain.

Pyramid Calculation:

Row 1: 5 4 7 3 8 6
↓ 5+4 4+7 7+3 3+8 8+6
Row 2: 9 1 0 1 4
↓ 9+1 1+0 0+1 1+4
Row 3: 0 1 1 5
↓ 0+1 1+1 1+5
Row 4: 1 2 6
↓ 1+2 2+6
Row 5: 3 8
Final Result: 38%

Key Rule: Always use only the last digit (ones place) when numbers exceed 9. For example, 5 + 4 = 9 (keep 9), but 4 + 7 = 11 (keep only 1).

Interpret the Result

The final two-digit number represents the compatibility percentage. Traditional Korean interpretation assigns meaning to different percentage ranges.

💫

90-99% Perfect

Rare and exceptional harmony. Traditional belief suggests cosmic alignment.

🌸

75-89% Excellent

Strong natural chemistry with great potential for lasting harmony.

🌱

50-74% Good

Solid foundation with room for growth through mutual effort.

🌊

30-49% Moderate

Differences exist but can complement each other with understanding.
